Sushi anyone?

my fiance is taking me out to dinner in a few hours, and we decided to go to Benihana since we've never been there before. so i was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a couple of first timers.

I am going for sushi at 7:30 EST.We do sushi once a week.For a first timer start off with some simple things like tuna and salmon.If you are doing some rolls try california roll(no fish)or tuna roll,salmon roll.BEWARE....it can become addictive!|||mmmm...Sushi|||I have eaten sushi a milion times but only benihana once decades ago - it is not known for its sushi but for its meat dishes.





I didn't even know they had sushi! But now that I am in the sticks, I'd go there in heartbeat if there was one within 75 miles!





But if that is where you are going, then you should know that it is very tradtional to sit at the sushi bar and ask the chef for recommendations. Ask if there are any specials, there usually are.





If you are daring, be sure to ask about such choices as uni, unagi, tako, ikura. If you are exceedingly lucky and daring you can try kawagani (only saw that once in the US).





I recommend against any rolls with sauce, such as spicy tuna or mayo, and if you are going for sushi as a special occasion, avoid non-seafood rolls. Also, avoid the cooked stuff be it ffied (spider roll, tempura roll, eg.) or shrimp (california roll, etc.). SAve your hunger for stuff you don't get elsewhere.





There might be a big roll called "rock and roll" that is covered with a selection of really good fish - almost liek a sampler - that is a good way to go IMHO. usually that is tuna, red snapper, salmon, and yellowtail. Yum!





Also, in a new place, I like to try the chirashi dish (a set variety selection of fish over rice in a bowl) just to get a sense of the chef's care of things and a variety of flavors and textures.





How to eat sushi?





If you are not good with chopsticks, pick it up with your thumb and forefinger, and dip it in the soy sauce in the small dish. Some people like to mix a little (a little!) wasabi (it is green, you will see it on your dish) in the soy sauce.





Dip so the fish part of the morsel is in the sauce, not the rice part orr ti will collapse into a mess. Quickly pop the whole thing in your mouth. One bite, and enjoy the variety of tastes and texures!





Yes your mouth is big enough! Millions of poeple do this every day! :) Eat the whole thing in one bite.





Take a taste of ginger (it will be on your plate too) between bites to refresh your palate. You can ask for more if you run out. You just need a sliver at a time, but some places don't give you that much.





Be sure to order green tea and miso soup as well. Have some beer, with edamame as appetizers.





Remember to have a blast and smile a lot. There will probably be friendly people near by too!

Enjoy!|||I thought Benihana is famous for teppanyaki rather than sushi.|||I hate sushi, but that's just me. Raw fish don't appeal to me much. But you might love it. That's the thing with sushi : either you love it or hate it.|||Ugh. Eating sushi at Bennihana's is like eating the steak at TGI Friday's.|||Well, I hope that you enjoyed your experience. I didn't know that Benihana even had sushi. Their claim to fame had been their teppanyaki style of cooking. Basically, it's cooking on flat grill in front of you. Depending on the skills of the cook, you might get a bit of a flashy knife show.





You didn't specify if this was your first sushi eating expedition or just your first trip to Benihana. My personal feeling is that for two people, the best place to sit is at the sushi bar where you can interact with the fish cutter. Not only does this give you an opportunity to see what other diners are having, but you can ask the fish cutter questions and he/she can help introduce you to the different flavors and textures of sushi and/or sashimi.





The best advice is to eat slowly, chew well and don't use too much soy sauce or wasabi.
